I was surprised to love the opening episode of Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, the documentary highlighting the inception of Kanye Wests’ career; before he reached a particular carnal success, when his hustle was the most crucial focus of his life. Before all the controversy, social media licks, yeezy’s and bits; a time when he was just humble enough to handle a snub. But of course, not too far off from the man we have come to revere, there is no snub great enough to ever put him on chill, else we might not know him.
There were so many moving moments throughout that hour and change, notably when Donda West said when speaking of her son, “He was always self-absorbed in a certain way,” and it made me laugh – as it totally makes sense the person we see today. The drive and element of faith or God-fidence that he exuded since day one, I am sure elated God because that is exactly the mentality needed to progress in a world such as the one we currently live.
As the possessor of his particular gift or gifts, it is important to acknowledge it, it is important to put to it to use.
It marveled me the life that his mother spoke into him, touching deeply as I now embark on the journey of motherhood myself. And having my own experiences growing up in my household, it is imperative for a mother, or any parent to push their children to maximize on their gifts, potentials and opportunities in life.
“Before I had my car, I use to be walking to the train practicing my Grammy speech.”
He was a star in the making, taking advantage of all his opportunities. And he knew it so much, presumptuously documenting his dream as it came into fruition. Knowing his worth, and not allowing for it to be demeaned, NO FREE BEATS. If that’s not a prime example of self-worth, then I don’t know what is – and I commend him for it. What a way to fortify the city; preparing for his foreseen success – that’s what you do.
Film directors Coodie and Chike too believed heavily in Kanye West’s vision that they followed his progress for 23 years, affording them their opportunity to premiere the intricate trek of Kanye’s destined career for our entertainment pleasures via Netflix; an example of support that all those in possession of greatness should have. Confidence and support go hand in hand when pursuing greatness.
Reminding me of the Book of Deuteronomy and counting the amount of times God encouraged Moses to “be courageous and strong” and He, the Lord would always be with him in the midst of it all; and then again in the Book of Joshua God encouraged his assistant Joshua once Moses passed on to again, “be courageous and strong”. Between the support and courage God breathed into his children, there really is no stopping us, but us. I heard so much of that in Kanye speaking throughout this first episode, him knowing that God would see him through to stardom. If nothing else, that’s what I took from this motion picture.
Have you seen it yet?
