I Had to Repent! I Was Doing This Thing All Wrong | Fortify the City
Podcast Episode
You can pray, believe, and stay active in faith—and still lack real relationship with God. This episode is a raw moment of honesty, calling for repentance, deeper time with Him, and a reset in how we approach our walk.
It’s easy to say you believe—but when was the last time you truly sat with God?
A Moment of Honest Reflection
This week required a level of honesty.
Not with anyone else—but with myself.
There are moments in your walk where everything looks aligned on the surface. You’re showing up. You’re speaking about faith. You’re moving in purpose. But underneath that, there’s a quiet realization that something is off.
That’s where this started.
In this episode of Fortify the City, there is a real and necessary acknowledgment—one that many believers experience but don’t always say out loud:
Not spending enough time with God.
The Gap Between Desire and Discipline
Walking in Christ is not easy.
And if we’re being honest, how many of us can truly say we’re doing this right?
It’s easy to desire more from God.
More clarity.
More direction.
More elevation.
We see ourselves growing. We envision where we want to be spiritually. We talk about purpose and calling.
But there is a deeper question that has to be asked:
Are you actually putting in the time with God to support what you’re asking for?
Because desire without discipline creates a gap.
A gap between where you say you want to be and what you’re actually building.
When Prayer Becomes One-Sided
Too often, prayer becomes one-sided.
We come to God with our questions, our concerns, our needs. We speak. We ask. We lay everything out.
And then we leave.
There’s no pause. No stillness. No space created for anything beyond what we have to say.
But that’s not how real relationships work.
Not with people—and definitely not with God.
Because relationship requires exchange. It requires time. It requires presence.
And if we’re only showing up to speak, but not to listen, then what we’re building isn’t relationship—it’s routine.
Are You Making Space to Hear?
Have you ever considered that God wants to speak to you too?
That He may have direction to give.
Correction to offer.
Clarity to reveal.
Or even just presence to sit in.
But we don’t stay long enough to receive it.
We move quickly—back into our routines, our plans, our responsibilities. We check the box of prayer and continue on with our day, never slowing down enough to hear His voice.
And over time, that pattern creates distance.
Not because God is absent—but because we are not present long enough to engage.
The Danger of Surface-Level Faith
This is where the reality becomes uncomfortable.
It is possible to say you believe.
To pray regularly.
To even produce things connected to faith.
And still lack a real relationship with God.
That’s a dangerous place to be.
Because outward activity can create the illusion of alignment. It can make it seem like everything is in place when, internally, there is a disconnect.
And without intentional time spent with God, that disconnect only grows.
The Questions That Matter
Moments like this force you to ask harder questions.
Are you seeking God—or just what He can do for you?
Are you building relationship—or just maintaining routine?
Are you aligned—or just active?
These are not surface-level questions.
They require honesty.
Because it’s easy to stay busy in faith. It’s easy to remain active. But activity does not equal intimacy.
And without intimacy, the foundation of your walk becomes unstable.
Repentance Is a Reset
This is where repentance comes in.
Not as punishment—but as realignment.
A moment to acknowledge what’s been off.
A decision to turn away from it.
A commitment to return to what actually matters.
Repentance is not about perfection. It’s about awareness followed by action.
And in this case, the action is simple—but not always easy:
Make time.
Real time.
Intentional time.
Consistent time.
Because relationship is built there.
Building What Actually Matters
Relationship with God is not built on occasional moments.
It’s not built on convenience. It’s not sustained by quick prayers or rushed check-ins.
It’s built on consistency.
On showing up even when there’s nothing to ask for.
On sitting in stillness even when there’s no immediate response.
On choosing presence over productivity.
That’s where depth is developed.
That’s where alignment happens.
Final Thought
This conversation is not about condemnation.
It’s about awareness.
Because once you recognize the gap, you have the opportunity to close it.
To repent.
To reset.
To return.
And to rebuild your relationship with God in a way that is real, consistent, and aligned.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not about how much you say you believe.
It’s about how much time you’re willing to spend with the One you say you believe in.
