Held Together: The Christ Who Sustains Everything

There are seasons in life when everything feels as though it is coming apart. Plans change without warning. Relationships become strained. Doors close that we expected God to open, while others remain shut longer than we imagined. We carry responsibilities that seem heavier than our strength can bear, and before long we find ourselves trying to hold together careers, families, ministries, finances, emotions, and expectations—all at the same time. It is exhausting. Yet perhaps one of the greatest misconceptions we carry is believing that we were ever meant to hold everything together in the first place.

Paul offers a breathtaking reminder in Colossians 1:17:

“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Many people read this verse and immediately think of creation. They picture Jesus speaking the universe into existence, placing stars in the heavens, forming the earth, and breathing life into humanity. While that is certainly true, Paul is revealing something even greater. Jesus did not simply create the world and then step away from it. He continues to sustain it. Every sunrise, every season, every breath, and every moment exists because Christ continually upholds His creation by His power.

This changes the way we see Jesus.

He is not merely the beginning of our story; He is the One faithfully carrying it forward. He is not simply the Author of life; He is its Sustainer. Every moment that passes is held together because of Him. The universe is not drifting aimlessly through space, nor are the lives of those who belong to Him. Everything remains under His sovereign authority.

This truth also reveals something deeply personal about our relationship with Christ. We often speak about inviting Jesus into our lives, but Scripture paints a much larger picture. Jesus is not meant to occupy one compartment of our lives alongside our work, our family, our ambitions, or our dreams. He is the center from which every part of life finds its meaning. Without Him, everything begins to unravel because we place expectations on people, achievements, or possessions that only Christ was ever meant to carry.

Perhaps this is why so many people feel exhausted. We have become experts at trying to sustain ourselves. We believe we must hold our families together, hold our future together, hold our emotions together, and somehow hold our faith together. Yet Colossians gently reminds us that Jesus never asked us to carry what only He can sustain.

The writer of Hebrews echoes this truth when he describes Christ as the One who is “upholding the universe by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). If Jesus is powerful enough to sustain creation itself, then surely He is able to sustain the life He has entrusted to you. He is not overwhelmed by your unanswered prayers. He is not intimidated by your uncertainty. He is not surprised by the delays, disappointments, or difficulties you face. While your circumstances may shift from one season to the next, His faithfulness never changes.

This is where our identity becomes secure. The world invites us to anchor ourselves in things that constantly change—our careers, our accomplishments, our relationships, or the approval of others. But Scripture teaches that our identity is rooted in the One who is before all things. Before your successes, He was there. Before your failures, He was there. Before your fears, He was there. Before your future, He is already there. Because Christ never changes, those who belong to Him have a foundation that cannot be shaken.

Jesus Himself said, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). These words are not meant to discourage us; they are meant to free us. We were never created to live independently from the One who gives us life. The invitation of discipleship is not to become stronger on our own but to become increasingly dependent upon Christ. The more we abide in Him, the more we discover that His strength is sufficient where ours falls short.

Perhaps that is the greatest revelation of Colossians 1:17. Jesus is far more than the Creator we worship on Sunday mornings. He is the Savior who walks with us on Monday mornings. He is the Shepherd who guides us through uncertainty. He is the Sustainer who carries us when our strength is gone. He is the Center who gives purpose to every calling, peace to every storm, and hope to every waiting season.

When life feels fragmented, remember that Christ is not. When your plans seem uncertain, remember that His purposes remain secure. And when it feels as though everything around you is falling apart, rest in this unchanging truth: the same hands that uphold the universe are faithfully holding you.

Following Jesus is not merely believing that He exists. It is learning, day by day, to trust that the One who holds all things together is fully able to hold your life together as well.
